It was a thrill to be quoted by The Fashion Spot in an article entitled “Ten Wedding Lies Pinterest Tells Us About Weddings.”
My advice in that article focused on the fact that it is so common to choose what is safe. People feel most comfortable with what they know. It’s easy to get caught up in non-stop pinning and wanting to capitalize on the great ideas that were pioneered by others. I can most definitely see how that can happen, as I too have been mesmerized by the abundance of quality information and ingenious ideas that it can provide. Pinterest is such an incredible platform for sharing ideas, assuming that it is used for that purpose. But when your wedding isn’t your own creation, it was probably misused.
Think about it. Some creative soul came up with a great idea and then posts the visual on Pinterest. Then, through the power of pinning it gets pinned by umpteen users. Now it’s your idea, along with hundreds of thousands of other people’s idea too. If you do that with all your wedding components imagine how unoriginal your wedding becomes.
Here are three excellent ways to use Pinterest productively.
Consider choosing just one pin to inspire the rest.
Pick just one design element that really excites you and then hinge everything else off of that one idea. Build your color palette, textures and theme elements by really embracing that visual and making it your design foundation. Imagine how rewarding it will feel to call your design ‘your own’.
Add a new twist to an old idea.
Kiss the Planner Tip of the Day in Bridal Guide suggestion is to think of Pinterest as a launching off point, not the end all, be all. If you find it too hard to narrow it down to just one Mac Daddy Pin, choose a few concepts, but make sure you can add on your own creative spin to make the idea more personal and more about you. Us Pinterest as a starting point, buy be sure to add your own flavor!
Use Pinterest as a communication tool.
If you enlist the help of a florist or event designer to execute your wedding design, share your inspiration board with them for the purpose of improving the communication needed to get inside your head. Bear in mind that sometimes being super specific with your direction can stifle a good designer’s creativity. If you are open to hiring them to not just execute, but to also design with your guidelines in mind, then the end result will likely take a good idea and make it even more exciting and unique than it was before.
